Modern Prison (2003) is K.C. Carceral, which is a pseudonym used to protect the identity of an inmate who is serving a life sentence. The other authors are criminologists who
edited his observations, putting them into a book format suitable for classroom use. This is a gripping, often disturbing, narrative, as Carceral relates an eyewitness, insiders account of what it
means to be in prison, which is a life that is totally beyond the parameters of mainstream society. One of the most surprising aspects of Carcerals account was how
it is emphasized to inmates that they are not longer members of society; they are outside of society. Considering this, it is probably not surprising that inmates devise their own
culture, with their own rules and socially understood sense of mores. Carceral describes the violence and the friendships that are possible behind prison walls, and how people react to being
warehoused like a commodity. Adaptation strategies used by inmates: (This could not be compared to Voices in the Field because the writer could not locate this text.) Inmates
adapt to prison life in various ways. They work out their own rules for conduct, such as: be tough; never show weakness; do not trust prison authorities, etc. One inmate
sums up this code very well: Even if you do not feel tough enough to cope, act as if you are. Suffer in silence. Never admit you are afraid. Whatever
you see "going down"... do not get involved and do not say anything. Do not snitch-the penalty can be death. Do not help the authorities in any way. Do not
