information that will ultimately allow them to narrow down the playing field in terms of who would most likely be responsible for a particular crime or series of crime.
To be effective, however, behavioral profiling must be accomplished using careful organization and analysis of data. Data must be categorized and those categorizations prioritized. The intent of this
paper is to suggest a prioritized order for the various categories of data that will be generated during criminal profiling for specific types or series of crimes.
Careful observation is the most important tool the criminal profiler can have. All of the rules regarding data collection and processing apply just
as accurately to criminal profiling, however, as they do to any other type of criminal investigation. The idea is that the evidence that is generated must be demonstrably valid
in a court of law. Profiles can only be generated, in fact, on the basis of good solid evidence. Consider
the typical types of evidence that surround any one criminal act, for example. Criminals, unintentionally or not, leave behind many hints as to who they might be. Obviously,
such irrefutable evidence as fingerprint or DNA evidence is the most desirable in crime scene investigation. Even the most minute details of a crime scene can become invaluable in
allowing investigators to begin to narrow the playing field in types of potential suspects, however. Indeed, these types of details can, in some cases, become practically overwhelming. This
