off-task behaviors 3. resistance to direction 4. singing at inappropriate times 5. does not follow along with lessons 6. tries to engage peers in off-task behaviors Functions Served by
the Behaviors There are three basic functions of the behaviors demonstrated by Alex: 1. to avoid participation in an activity; 2. to separate from the group in
order to attain one-on-one adult communication; and 3. to get the attention of other students. The most prevalent behaviors are linked to avoidance of tasks and resistance to
transition. Factors Contributing to the Behaviors Perhaps the most significant factor contributing to Alexs behaviors is his lack of focus and his inability to stay on task in
the presence of off-task stimuli. In particular, Alex cannot stay focused when he is required to participate in a task, especially if there are other students working around him
or when he must transition from one activity to another. Transition times are an area of focus when creating a behavior plan, because transition between activities at the
same desk and transitioning from his desk to another workspace represent times when Alex demonstrates high levels of avoidance behaviors. Strengths Alexs strengths include the following: * Ability
to participate in activities he enjoys; * Ability to make transitions, even if he has some difficulty in the process; * Ability to participate appropriately some of the time; *
Ability to follow directions some of the time. Interests Alexs interests include science, reading and problem solving. Alex enjoys some interactions with other students and interactions
with adults, as demonstrated through his communications with the observer. Behavioral Goals and Objectives Alexs behavioral goals and objectives include the following: * Alex will participate appropriately in
