psychological studies employ a diverse array of theoretical perspectives, there are also many different theoretical takes on exactly how effective leadership interfaces with psychology. For instance, trait theory suggests that excellent leaders are determined by the appearance of certain innate psychological or personality-oriented traits in a given individual. However, other theories such as behavior theory assert that the behaviors manifested by an individual have the most profound impact upon his or her effectiveness as a leader. This latter approach rose to prominence along with the behavioral perspective in psychology itself, and still provides great insights into how one can cultivate superior leadership. This paper will explore the idea that a behavioral approach to leadership, because of its contextual flexibility, is the ideal method for managing a social organization such as a martial arts team because of its ability to focus both on the successful completion of tasks, as well as the cultural and psychological needs of followers. Behavioral theory in leadership places the emphasis upon the behaviors that a leader chooses to exhibit. This being the case, it is inherently a less deterministic attitude than something like trait theory, which suggests that leaders are born, rather than cultivated. In behavioral theory, anyone has the potential to become an effective leader if he or she is willing to examine what behaviors are correlated with the greatest organizational effectiveness, and then is willing to adopt them. Behavioral leadership also has a tendency to be highly contextual. This means that a behavioral leader might choose different strategic approaches in different contexts, whereas other types of leaders may stick to the same strategy, come what may.
