Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page paper. Biological factors have been suspected of causing criminal behaviors off and on for a century. While the early theories have been discounted, the most recent research in genetics has brought the issue to the forefront again. One conclusion of recent research is that there is no ‘crime gene’ but there are genes that could predispose an individual to aggression, violence and other antisocial behaviors. While these genes may predispose a person to certain traits, they do not in and of themselves cause a person to commit any kind of crime. This paper elaborates on this premise. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Issues Genetics plays a strong role in behavior. While genetic research over the past three decades has provided far more insight and information, it is not the first
time that biological factors have been identified in guiding behaviors. McInerney (2008) reported that in the late 19th century, Sir Francis Galton was the fist scientist who linked heredity and
behaviors. In the early 20th century, the cause of criminal behavior was attributed to low intelligence and some sort of heredity degeneration. In the 1960s and 1970s, the theory was
that an extra Y chromosome in men was the cause of their crimes (Applebaum, 2005). Today, the field is called human behavior genetics and it is this field that investigates
the links between genetics and environment in human behavior. This is why human behavioral genetics explores and analyzes the family when looking at behaviors of individuals (McInerney, 2008). Research has
found there are some behaviors that do indeed run in families. Burfeind and Bartusch (2011) reported that crime seems to run in families so the question has always been
whether or not a propensity for crime is inherited. Some studies have shown intergenerality of crime across as many as three generations, however, the authors argue this does not mean
