predominantly an issue associated with genetics and family history. There may be some arguments in favour of each perspective, but the reality is that there is a great deal of
influences that an individual can exercise over the current and future health in terms of their behaviour partners. By understanding the potential impact that different behaviour patterns can have on
health the student will be empowered to protect their current and future health, this can be seen by looking at influences that are the result of behaviour, such as stress,
the use of tobacco and alcohol, the use of drugs as well as the influences that may impact on diabetes and cancer. 2. Stress
Although stress is well known, in recent surveys is has been seen to be even more prevalent than traditionally thought. It has been found that between 70-90% of
individuals find life stressful (Anonymous, 2001). With over fifty different symptoms that are part of stress it is apparent why it may not be recognised in all cases.
The common symptoms of stress includes, tiredness and fatigue, weight changes for no obvious reason, either losses or gains, back pain, digestive problems and insomnia as well as the link
with hypertension and heart conditions to mention only a few. Where there is a high level of stress there will often
