"the application of learning principles to change or eliminate maladaptive or abnormal behavior".
Behavioral therapy has been utilized in a diversity of ways. McDougal (1998), for example, reports on the
usefulness of self management as a behavior modification tool in addressing Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD). He conducted a search of the literature and identified three studies which had utilized
self-management techniques on attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder students. These studies explored various aspects of behavioral modification including a comparison of the value of behavioral self-monitoring of attentional behavior verses self-monitoring
of productivity. McDougal (1998) emphasizes that while behavioral self monitoring (BSM) was of obvious benefit to ADD students it should be
accompanied by other types of behavioral modification as well and continued instructor oversight. McDougal (1998) reports that there are two components of self-monitoring used in the majority of studies
evaluating the effectiveness of self monitoring. These are self-assessment and self recording. McDougal (1998) emphasizes the importance of continuing teacher evaluation of students effective use of such techniques
as "self-evaluation, self-graphing, self-reinforcement, self-modeling, and self-instruction" and that: "professionals should continue to design creative
