Precise differences depend on the nature of the work and the level at which it occurs - a temporary factory worker should behave differently than a high-end consultant. Similarly, the employers role, responsibility and ability to deal with conflicts is quite different as well. Type of Role The type of role that the outsourced individual fills greatly affects the employee relations issue. A consultant can be expected to have been called in to look at some specific problem or assess current processes for the purpose of seeking out improvements that the organization can make to achieve better customer service or greater internal efficiency. The consultant is expected to have managerial ability as well as the ability to assess facts, digest them into processes and formulate answers to questions that may not have yet been asked (Breitkopf, 2005). The consultant typically is more highly paid than regular employees as well. If a consultant being paid $125 - $200 an hour has been present for some time and has not yet identified items s/he is there to identify, then the contracting company well may dismiss the consultant for nonperformance.
