For instance, the kindergarten teacher is interested in knowing the letter recognition and letter knowledge of students, while the Third Grade teacher needs to know her students reading comprehension skills. After discovering the level of knowledge and skill, students need to be grouped for appropriate instruction and practice. Rather than grouping based only on the standardized test scores, flexible grouping may be used. In fact, flexible grouping is a component of the reading/literacy program recommended. Four Blocks is recommended because it is a multisensory, multilevel literacy program that incorporates and integrates reading and writing. It also allows the teacher to use special programs for at-risk students. To assist the beginning teacher, a literacy block lesson is presented with approximate times for each of the components in the lesson. Reading Assessment and Evaluation There are numerous reading assessments available for the new teacher to consider. The particular type of reading skills assessment would depend on the grade range. For example, in Kindergarten and First Grade, the teacher would want to evaluate a childs letter recognition ability. This could be done simply by presenting the alphabet in upper case and lower case type, one letter at a time (Torgesen, 1998). Letter-sound knowledge can be measured by presenting one letter at a time and asking the child what sound that letter makes when it is in a word (Torgesen, 1998). If the teacher wants to use a formal national test, she could use the letter identification section of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test-Revised (Torgesen, 1998).
