Sometimes, referred to as "The Symphony of Destiny," this appellation refers to Beethovens comment that the opening motif, which is "Thats how destiny knocks on your door" ("Beethovens...Symphony"). Beethovens Fifth Symphony is in the key of C Minor, and it is in the sonata-allegro form (Deng). The first movement (Allegro con brio) introduces this distinctive motif, which provides the main theme for the entire work ("Beethovens...Symphony"). The opening is "fiery, energetic and loud (fortissimo)" (Deng). This creates an effect that establishes the drama of the work (Deng). After the opening measures, with their famous da-da-da-DAAAA rhythm, Beethoven moves to the relative major and the horns present the second theme, with "a fanfare using the fate rhythm" (Gibbs). This lyrical second theme, which is softer then the first, is played by the violins and "inconspicuously accompanied in the lower strings by the rhythm" (Gibbs). This movement encompasses all of the features that are associated with Beethovens music, which are the "building of intensity, suspense, a thrilling coda, and also mysteries" (Gibbs). For instance, the oboe gets a "brief, unaccompanied solo cadenza," which is situated near the recapitulation, which causes listeners to consider its meaning or message within the context of the overall construction of the work (Gibbs). The second movement (Andante con moto) presents a lyrically beautiful theme that has a "hymnal resonance," which is sharp contrast to the dramatic nature of the first movement ("Beethovens...Symphony").
