(lively, with vigor) begins with a simple rhythmic motif that is comprised of "three shorts and a long" (Machlis 224). This famous motif is announced in unison by the strings and the clarinets, establishing the home key of C minor. The brief, but commanding gesture, provides the foundation out of which the first theme develops and grows, as Beethoven expresses this powerful motif with repetitions that occur at various levels of the scale and with altered intervals of the original germinating rhythm (Machlis 224). The power of the movement evolves from the focused, single-minded way in which Beethoven develops the underlying motif, the famous ta-ta-ta TAAAAAAA. This rhythm, becomes torrential in its power, is also firmly controlled, achieving a sense of power that was new to music (Machlis 225). The bridge is also fashioned from the basic motif and transitions the score to the related key of E-flat major. The lyrical second theme, to which the bridge connects, provides a relative sense of relaxation after the intensity of the first theme. Nevertheless, as the "violins, clarinet and flute" each sound the second theme in turn, the basic motif, that is, the rhythm of "three short and a long," is present and played by the cellos and double basses (Machlis 225). The Exposition concludes with a short section, the codetta, which restates the basic rhythm (Machlis 225). The transition between the first and second themes in Beethovens Fifth Symphony is much more compact than the rather leisurely transition that Mozart employed in the first movement of his G-minor Symphony (Machlis 225). Nevertheless, while there are obvious differences, there are also similarities.
