sonata-symphony" (p. 222). This statement is particularly true of Beethovens 6th Symphony, which is known as the Pastoral. In many ways, this is Beethovens most strikingly original symphony, as it
has five movement instead of the usual four and its mood is quite different from that of many of his other famous works (Beethoven: the Pastoral Symphony, 2004). This work
also says a great deal about the personality of its composer. In general, Beethoven did not get along well with people. He was most at ease and happy when
he was in the countryside, walking by himself. He once wrote to a friend, "How glad I am to be able to road in wood and thicket, among the trees
and flowers and rocks...my bad hearing does not trouble m here...In the woods, there is enchantment which expresses all things" (Glesner, 1996). This intense love of nature is clearly
heard in the Pastoral. The Pastoral premiered on Thursday, December, 1808, in an unheated concert hall in Vienna. After renting the hall, Beethoven did not have the funds to
provide heat (Threasher, 2003). The Sixth Symphony was part of a program that was four hours long and comprised entirely of new music, including Beethovens Fifth Symphony. The musicians were
under-rehearsed, the soprano who sang one of Beethovens arias had a bad case of stage fright and the audience was freezing (Glesner, 1996). In other words, the Pastoral has a
less than successful public debut, which belies the fascination that this work has held for audience and composers since it was first heard. Each movement of the Pastoral has
