A professional educator is dedicated to lifelong learning, understands the complexities of interpersonal relationships, accepts a range of different roles, demonstrates an investment in student success, and supports the efficacy of learners and self. All of these characteristics are imperative to the viewpoint of a professional educator and make the difference between a career educator and someone who accepts teaching as a job. The statement that a professional educator should have a lifelong commitment to learning seems obvious. Educators are dedicated to the education of children, and in doing this; they must also be dedicated to their own education. Professional development and continuing education are necessary in order to maintain the highest standards and quality in education provided for learners. Professional educators are lifelong learners who maintain their commitment to students through their own personal education (Armstrong, Henson & Savage, 2009). Professional educators also understand the complexities of interpersonal relat4ionshios and seek out ways to ensure that relat4inoships with others foster positive outcomes (Armstrong, Henson & Savage, 2009). Professional educators must foster relationships with students, parents, other professionals and even within the community in which they teach (Armstrong, Henson & Savage, 2009). Subsequently, the focus on interactions and communication are beneficial to maintaining a professional focus for professional teachers. Professional educators must accept that their job will require they adopt a range of different roles. Professional educators may need to take on administrative or departmental roles, act as natural leaders within their content area, or even work as mediators or counselors to support the educational process (Armstrong, Henson & Savage, 2009).
