And, while nobody is going to suggest they go to bed, they will soon realize that staying up until all hours leaves them unable to do their work. As for cleaning a messy room. Well, if they intend to have friends visit, they will have to do a modicum of cleaning. Then, there is the real possibility that they will not be able to afford their own apartment and will have to have one or more roommates. To become independent, an individual will accept the many roles and responsibilities of adulthood. The Indiana Department of Education reminds adolescents that they will involved in financial management, finding an apartment, paying the bills, making their own decisions on just about everything, doing the shopping, e.g., groceries, establishing a family of close friends, setting career goals and life goals and working to achieve those goals, taking care of self when ill, keeping a job, and establishing a different relationship with parents and other family members (Family and Consumer Science, 2005). An individual takes on independence in transitioning from the adolescent stage of development to the adult stage as described by Erikson and others. As soon as an individual is 18 years old, they are legally considered an adult and as such, they are responsible for their own behaviors (Child Development Institute, 2010). As independent adults, these folks are now responsible for everything in life.
