multiple sclerosis. C. Conclusions Introduction The Beck Depression Inventory(r)-II (BDI(r)-II) is used to detect depression in patients. It is a quick inventory needing only about five minutes to
administer the 21 items on the assessment instrument. Beck is the most widely-used instrument for assessing depression (Pearson Education, 2012). This essay reviews two research articles in which the Beck
Depression Inventory was used as part of the methodology. The two studies are very different from each other which affirms the broad use of the Beck Depression Inventory. Literature
Review McPherson and Martin (2010) explored the reliability and validity of using the Beck Depression Inventory with an alcohol-dependent population. The researchers used three criteria: test-retest reliability; factor analysis; and
internal consistency reliability. While alcoholism and depression are often seen together in a patient, the exact relationship is not clear. Prevalence rates of depression coexisting with alcohol dependence are
as much as 80 percent (McPherson & Martin, 2010). There are few studies on the correlation between alcohol-dependency and depression. One of the questions is which came first, the alcoholism
or the depression? Along with this is the fact that the Beck Depression Inventory has not been validated on this population. The inconsistencies in data regarding a correlation between depression
and alcohol dependence could be due to how alcohol consumption is measured. The types of measurement for alcohol consumption are frequency, usual and maximum quantity at each occasion, volume, and
heavy episodic drinking (McPherson & Martin, 2009). Depression has been most closely associated with episodic drinking and high volume at each occupation (McPherson & Martin, 2009). This study revealed that
test-retest criteria were above the accept threshold. Internal consistently was also above the accept threshold (McPherson & Martin, 2009). The results support the use of the Beck Depression Inventory with
