times, the truth is that beauty and body image have always been a part of all societies. Women have constantly, perhaps since the beginning of time, tried to emulate and
achieve the ideal of beauty in their cultures. It may be that the ideal image of beauty today, coupled with media which touches everyone, has led to many young women
developing health problems through eating disorders, but the truth is that women have always gone to great, and often drastic, lengths to meet the ideal of their cultures demands concerning
beauty and body image. The following paper examines two essays, Suzanne Jordans That Lean and Hungry Look and John Leos Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, as they offer an understanding
of women, beauty and body image today. Beauty and Body Image In Suzanne Jordans That Lean and Hungry Look the reader finds something of a humorous take on weight
and body image concerns. The author indicates how skinny people are simply no fun, and dont know how to have fun. She indicates fat people are far more real, and
realistic, and are always there when they are needed. For example, Jordan notes how "In the first place, thin people arent fun....Theyve always got to be adoing. Give them a
coffee break, and theyll jog around the block" (Jordan). Fat people, on the other hand, are far more real and "Fat people...will like you even if youre irregular and have
acne...They will cry in your beer with you" (Jordan). While her essay is quite comical, and clearly very stereotypical, it does make a great deal of sense in society
