world and long for a quiet romp in the woods. Little do some of these tourists know that relief is just about 60 minutes away by bus. Harriman/Bear Mountain State
Park is located just about an hour north of New York City and also contains one of the states best hiking trails (Kubick 51). The park contains 51,600 acres
inclusive of 225 miles of marked and well-maintained hiking trails (Kubick 51). Arranged in an interesting fashion, the park boasts a web-like network (51). Within the park, Kubick describes some
of the amenities as being "paths to lakes, swamps, rocky summits, and even abandoned iron mines" (51). Indeed, this park which is located close to the largest city in the
world has a country-like atmosphere with a wealth of possibilities for the vacationer. An example of a nice patch of land within Harriman is the Bald Rocks region
along the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail (Kubick 51). Here, vistas of the distant Catskills which are opened to the northwest may be experienced (51). When walking through the Dunning Trail, one passes
through laurel thickets onto expanses of bare rock--replete with boulders-- in an area which has been dubbed Bowling Rocks (51). There are many trails to choose from in Harriman. No
matter which one is chosen, open landscape is a part of the setting (51). Another example is West Mountain shelter on Timp-Torne Trail that overlooks the Hudson River
(Kubick 51). Panoramic views may be experienced from the Big Hill shelter which is located near the intersection of the Long Path and Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail (51). The New
