it somehow seems much worse when children are involved, and particularly grievous when those children are turned into soldiers. This paper discusses Beahs book about his life as a soldier
in his countrys civil war. Discussion In a revealing interview with The New York Times, Beah says "Sometimes I feel that living in New York City, having a good family
and friends, and just being alive is a dream, that perhaps this second life of mine isnt really happening" (2007). There are several things of note here: first, Beah isnt
sure that his new life cant be taken away as easily as the old one was; and second, he may be feeling some "survivors guilt"-that he escaped when so many
of his friends and family members were killed. Some of the most important years of his life, years when he learned how to interact with the world around him and
form his own character, independent of his parents, were the years he spent fighting. Its hard to envision a worse start to a young mans life than to bring him
face to face with the atrocities of civil war. Did he like his village life or the city life better? The city is exciting-it is New York, after all-and
hes happy to be there, living in safety with the woman who adopted him as her son. But life in the village, as he describes it in the opening pages
of the book, seems idyllic, another world that has a tranquility about it that we have long since lost in the West as dusk falls, the "evening music of birds
