(Beilharz, 2000). Traditional views of the Holocaust see it as an aberration or, at most, a problem with German culture. Bauman sees the Holocaust as intrinsic to the philosophy of
modernity. However, as Beilharz points out, he does not simply reverse the usual logic of all things modern being "good" and picture all modernity as "bad" (2000). Baumans argument indicates
a comprehensive understanding of both modernity and the alternative paradigm offered by the postmodern perspective. Taking Baumans argument concerning the Holocaust as exemplary of his stance toward totalitarianism in
general, Baumans writing makes it clear that he does not argue that the advent of totalitarianism in the twentieth century was the inevitable result of modernity. Rather, he states that
this was merely "one possibility within it (modernity)" that was made manifest by the confluence of certain elements coming together at the opportune historical movement for a worst case scenario
