During the Civil War homes were battlegrounds, stations of organization, and no family was safe from having war on their doorstep, or in their home. As such home life played
a very important role in the Civil War as it was always on the minds of the men at war. The following paper examines James McPhersons "Battle Cry of Freedom,"
arguing his work is right in indicating that what happened at home affected events on the battlefield, and vice versa. "Battle Cry of Freedom" by McPherson: The Influence of
Home It is perhaps impossible to truly argue that one battle or another was affected by a particular man or men as they were focused on the homes they had
left. But, it is possible to argue that when men are worried about their homes and their families, especially poor families, they will not fight so hard, nor fight with
incredible focus in many respects. In McPhersons book he presents the argument, from during the Civil War, that "Rich men could buy their way out of the army whether
or not their skills were needed at home. This gave rise to a bitter saying: A rich mans war but a poor mans fight" (McPherson 442). Poor men were needed
back home so that they could help with their familys farming and other aspects of survival. Rich men did not need to worry about this for they had enough money
