Notes that although domestic abuse is not a new component of our society, it is one which has seemingly become a more prominent component in recent years. Contends that with our increased awareness of this phenomenon we have begun to consider the psychological impacts which battered women sustain, impacts which sometimes drive them to violence and even murder. As a consequence, the concept of the battered woman has now entered the courtroom not solely as a description of a plaintiff but as a defense strategy for a women who has committed a violent crime as a result of the psychological trauma to which she has been subjected.
