defense and "for the conquest of territory," forming a covenant not only between themselves, but also with spiritual forces in order to gain divine protection for their society (Bowker, 2007).
This covenant was made with the god Yhwh, which is typically translated as "Yahweh" (Bowker, 2007). Yhwh was originally a "god in the council of the Canaanite supreme god El,"
however, Yhwh "assumed the powers and attributes of El" and this transformation can be considered the starting initiative of Judaism (Bowker, 2007). Judaic Holy Scripture, the Old Testament of
the Christian Bible, records a series of covenants established with God. These covenants, which culminated, but did not end, with Moses, demanded that the Jewish people should be "as holy
as God" and this goal could be achieved by obeying Gods commandments, which were not only handed down in ancient writing, but also through the voices of a series of
prophets (Bowker, 2007). This moral code not only included proscriptions against criminal behavior, but also strict dietary laws and required rituals. The focus of Judaism was not on the afterlife,
but rather on living according to Gods word in this life. Judaism introduced into the world a high moral standard of love and justice, which could aid the world in
achieving resolution to conflict. Christianity: Built upon Judaic tradition, Christianity relates to the metaphysical world in much the same manner as this older religion, i.e., God and his angels
