a larger group of organisms that are useful in regard to the ecosystem (Bruns, White & Taylor, 1991). Each organism, in its own right, has a purpose. Basidiomycota is
just one of many organisms, but it is important in the scheme of things. In fact, each one of the named fungi is. The topic impacts society because it is
something that helps to explain the emergence of certain diseases. In fact, because some of the manifestations of basidiomycota can be fatal, it can be a life and death issue.
A student writing on this topic might have chosen this issue because if its relevance to human health. Historical and Background Information How long has this fungus
been viable? Berbee and Taylor suggest that these types of fungi have a lineage that goes back 600 million years (Blackwell, 2000). The fungal groups known as basidiomycota is associated
with the production of significant fruitbodies like puffballs, mushrooms, and brackets (Deacon, 2010). The group contains some microscopic fungi such as smut and rust fungi as well as some
yeasts (Deacon, 2010). One of the yeasts is called Sporobolomyces roseus (Deacon, 2010). Its basidiospores happen to be respiratory allergens (Deacon, 2010). Another is
Cryptococcus neoformans, and this grows on old bird droppings, something that can cause a fatal infection for immunocompromised individuals (Deacon, 2010). What happens is that the air-borne basidiospores initiate
lung infections, something that leads to the disease called Cryptococcus (Deacon, 2010). In fact, this is now "the fourth most important life-threatening diseases of AIDS patients in the USA,
and common also in Europe" (Deacon, 2010). Current Research and Implications One would think that basidiomycota would warrant extensive research because of its deadly effects on
