another family member about a medical condition. There are in fact many laws that protect patient rights. The Patient Bill of Rights is a concept adopted in 1998 by
the health care industry and it is designed to protect the rights of consumers ("ACS: The Patients Bill of Rights," 2008). There are a number of rights listed on the
bill inclusive of a choice of providers and the right to access emergency services without penalty ("ACS: The Patients Bill of Rights," 2008). One right that is perhaps little known
or not much discussed is the right to participation in the decision making process. An explanation of this right is as follows: "You have the right to know your treatment
options and to take part in decisions about your care. Parents, guardians, family members, or others that you select can represent you if you cannot make your own decisions" ("ACS:
The Patients Bill of Rights," 2008). The right of patients to make decisions is something that is often not explored. Many patients are told what they should do by
their physicians. For example, if a patient visits a doctor and due to age parameters, he or she writes an order for certain tests, many patients just take the prescription
and get the test done. They do not question whether or not they have a choice or if there are risks or side effects. Patients have a right to make
