Essay / Research Paper Abstract

6 pages in length. Humanity has been able to evolve as a species by learning about the world and how it impacts mankind's existence. Research has proven an instrumental component in achieving this ongoing objective as humans constantly strive to improve and advance. Determining the difference between basic and applied research is rather like setting the foundation of a home before actually building the structure: the knowledge must first exist before solutions can be drawn from it. Therefore, basic research serves to glean the fundamental awareness that something exists while applied research is using that understanding to craft a specific outcome. Therefore, basic research serves to glean the fundamental awareness that something exists while applied research is using that understanding to craft a specific outcome. We see continual confusion over the difference between basic and applied research. Keep in mind that the notion of "basic" as propagandized by the academics has to do with a psychological factor. For them, basic research is self-initiated--that is, not directed by some higher authority, and most often without any clearly stated, planned or obvious application. Consequently, we start off with confusion over who gives the orders, who sets the direction, and what those directions may be. "Applied research" as the academics would have it, implies that one is directed by a manager to focus ones efforts on a specific objective (Coates, 2005, p. 8). With basic research fueled by a scientific curiosity rather than a need to solve a specific problem, it stands to reason how applied research simply could not further the human species without its basic counterpart. Examples of this synergistic relationship abound; one only needs to sift through the last one hundred years of scientific discovery to realize the impact humanitys inherent inquisitiveness has had upon mans capacity to improve social, economic and health problems. Since basic research poses no obvious advantage for the human species - being conducted out of sheer interest and not application - it is subsequently not as well funded as applied research (Dietz, 2004). However, Dietz (2004) duly points out that if it were not for scientific ...
