the face, particularly if they are dying or are close to someone who is. Several centuries ago, in Japan, Basho was in such a situation. Basho has been described as
a seventeenth century Japanese wanderer ("In the blazing" 28). But he was more than that. Basho was a prolific poet, creating haiku and making a name for himself. His work
is still admired to this day. Likely, his short poems continue to be popular due to the nature of the haiku as a medium and also due to his
skill and talent. Basho could say much with few words, the concept behind Haiku. It is a challenge to be able to convey a whole story, and intense feeling, in
just a couple of sentences. In analyzing Bashos haiku one should take Japanese principles, Buddhist thoughts as well as the authors own life condition into account. The lines are rich
with meaning and in order to understand his works, one haiku may be utilized as an example. "Sick on journey" was Bashos last piece of work. The ethos
principles such as Sabi and Wabi, are contained in the Bashos last Haiku. By the title one immediately understands that something is awry. The poet, in reality is sick, as
