summed up in impressive baseball statistics alone. Roberto Clemente was much more than a man who could swing a bat, run fast, catch and throw. He considered himself
a proud representative of his beloved Puerto Rican people. Born on August 18, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Clemente was the son of a prosperous sugar plantation foreman (Hauberg,
1975). However, despite their financial security, the Clementes were no strangers to tragedy. Robertos sister Ana Iris died tragically in a freak fire accident at the age of
five, two of his young brothers succumbed to cancer, and his oldest sister, Rosa, died while giving birth to her daughter (Wulf, 1992). These losses undoubtedly left a profound
impression upon Roberto Clemente, and fueled his compassion for the less fortunate people who had suffered tragedies similar or greater than those of his own family. Clementes natural athletic
gifts were apparent at an early age, and by 17, "Momen," as he was called by family and close friends, received a $500 bonus to play in the Puerto Rican
baseball league (Hauberg, 1975). Drafted in 1954 by the National Leagues New York Dodgers, Clemente didnt come into his own as a man or an athlete until he signed
