integral component to the authors overall mystique, utilizing such literary techniques as dialogue, imagery, figurative language and interpretation. At first, Springer implies how one may not plainly recognize Melvilles
deeper assertions beyond his telltale quiet and pastoral direction; however, he later indicates how there is no denying how the undercurrent of human conflict is more than apparently portrayed through
Bartlebys odd behavior. The lack of understanding between and among the workers is paramount to Melvilles point, Springer (1965) notes, inasmuch as he
clearly illustrates the lack of connection within the workplace environment and beyond. That Bartlebys behavior is considered against the norm is indicative of how society is so programmed to
act in a certain way without any deviation in order for people to be accepted within the framework of the community. The human conflict that is inevitably displayed by
the disapproving onlookers speaks of the judgment and condemnation so readily apparent within an unyielding and intolerant society such as Bartlebys. "Another kind of man would have dismissed Bartleby
at once. Melville allows the narrator to be aware of this fact, which raises him in the readers estimation at the same time that it makes more room for
the unexpected. The very strangeness of Bartleby acts as a restraint on his employers legitimate practical demands" (Springer, 1965, pp. 410-418).
