The extent to which this has become a dichotomous issue in culture is readily apparent from the character of the discourse that is ongoing in the European and American publics.
Ever since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there has been an increasing tendency in that public discourse to associate Islam as a whole with extremist movements such as
Al-Qaida, and with other controversial issues such as the nuclear tensions in Iran. This has had the tendency to impose a political angle upon westernized interpretations of Islam, a trend
which may ultimately impact the extent to which Islam is able to integrate with western societies going forward. This paragraph helps the student begin to present an overview of
the issue that will inform the rest of the paper. In terms of popular conception, it is little secret that "Islam" and "the west" have increasingly been characterized as fundamentally
opposed concepts. The predominate conception of the West, in regards to this comparison, is one of unbridled secularism, obsessed with material gain and technological advancement, while Islam is typified as
highly traditional and driven by moral values rooted in ancient customs (Rahman, 2009). Obviously, such conceptions are not entirely accurate, and yet their "cartoon-like" simplicity is convenient in promoting a
dichotomous view and emphasizing the alien nature of the "Other" (regardless of which side of the debate one happens to be coming from (Rahman, 2009). However unfortunate this might be,
such dichotomous thinking is increasingly becoming the norm for Europeans and Americans who are having trouble culturally accepting Islam on its own terms. The extent of such "discomfort" is revealed
