: This chapter demonstrates the work of art criticism, in all its many permutations, by offering multiple interpretations of one specific work of art, Edouard Manets A Bar at the
Folies-Bergere. What is truly astounding in this chapter is the depth and breadth of how this painting has been addressed by interpreters and how greatly these interpretation have varied. One
set of critics see the painting purely in terms of pigment on canvas. Other see it in terms of a story that the artist is portraying. Some see it in
a formalistic framework; others are contextual in their approach. The critics that take a narrative approach to the painting, each seem to see a different story. The barmaid, for example,
has, at times, been described as a priestess, at other times, a whore. The man wearing a top hat has been identified as Manet himself by some; others see him
as the representative of the viewer. While the interpretations can be startlingly different, they all serve a similar purpose in that they compel the reader to ponder and consider a
personal interpretation. What once may have seemed simple on fist viewing the painting is not complex and that is the point of art criticism and its repercussions. Chapter
7 : In this chapter, the author broadens the topic of discussion, i.e., artistic interpretation, so that the reader is exposed to a number of different forms of interpretation. The
first of these that is presented concerns different interpretations of the paintings of Edward Hopper, a famous twentieth century American painter. Following the discussion of Hopper, the author offers an
