filled the coffers of the Old World with gold. The middle classes began to amass wealth and power. The art of the period reflected the turbulent nature of the times,
and produced art that was "bold of gesture and conception; vigorous, decorative, monumental" (Machlis, 1970, p. 266). However, the spirit of this era was expressed in different manner in different
countries, and these differences reflect the class struggle that was emerging at the time. France Baroque French art, for example, was aristocratic, in concept and grandeur (Fleming, 1974).
Louis XIV was King of France and everything under his reign suggested grandeur. For example, even though Peter Paul Rubens was Flemish by birth, he worked the majority of his
career in Paris and the richness and lavishness of his canvases is perfectly in keeping with the baroque ideal (Fleming, 1974). While Rubens was executing murals for the king, a
relatively unknown painter, Nicholas Poussin, left France in favor of Rome, where he built a solid reputation that brought him to the attention of Cardinal Richelieu (Fleming, 1974). Consequently,
in 1640 Poussin returned to Paris and to decorate the Grand Gallery of the Louvre and receive royal favors. However, he soon became a victim of courtly intrigues that drove
him back to Rome, where he continued to paint rich, lavish in the classical tradition favored by the aristocracy. An example of this is Poussins painting "Discovery of Achilles
