at Marseilles, Jan Vermeers The Kitchenmaid, and Diego Velazquez Las Meninas Baroque Paintings Peter Paul Rubens Marie Arrives at Marseilles is one
of those paintings that is truly alive with images, color, lighting and action. In this painting, without knowing who or what the figures are, one sees what appears to be
royalty above, perhaps on a walkway that is above a lower street or waters. Below there are figures, many of them naked, seemingly in a state of emotional pain or
ecstasy. The bodies and the royal figures above are bathed in the most light and the strongest colors that are set against dark colors and reds.
When one researches the painting it is noted that the painting is of the Queen of France, "Marie deMedici, a silly, willful monarch chiefly remembered for
squandering huge sums of money and quarelling incessantly with her spouse (she ruled temporarily after he was assasinated), and for commissioning Rubens to decorate two galleries with pictures immortalizing her
heroic exploits" (Irinas World). And, in this particular painting, which also holds an angel of sorts (actually a goddess) with a trumpet, it is noted that this figure heralds the
arrival of the queen (Irinas World). It is also interesting to note that he apparently spent a great deal of time on the figures below, those in the foreground, that
are actually Neptune and his "three voluptuous assistants...even lovingly adding beadlike drops of water on their ample buttocks" (Irinas World). It is
