for the organ and is one of the most famous pieces of Baroque music. As is typical of the Baroque style, there is a layered feel, as well as a
feeling of constant motion, of constant development and expansion that transforms the simple opening strains into a fabric of sound that is truly magical. Loud passages contrast against soft, as
Bach builds texture within the performance of this single performance instrument through variations in rhythm and volume. The purpose and intent of Bach in this piece appears to be similar
to that of a contemporary abstract artists, as the music does not conjure emotion or images as much as offers an intricate pattern that collectively elicits from the listener a
sense of awe and wonder at the complex beauty of the music. The classical music of Beethoven blends the varied textures of the orchestra, with strings, woodwinds, brass and
percussion providing a rich texture. In listening to Beethoven Fifth Symphony, similarities as well as differences with Baroque music are quite evident. Like Bach, Beethoven begins with a simple brief
