While in many arenas, management is something that is implemented on a personal basis where no specific theory is utilized, many managers come from one background or another. They may be authoritarian, relying on old models such as what comes from Fayol or Taylor. They may otherwise rely on newer ideas from Peter Drucker or Ken Blanchard. And while some management theorists have revolutionized that way things work in certain companies, there are particular management paradigms that are rather complex and hard to implement. No matter which theories one comes to rely upon, it does seem that management theory is something that is embraced and tweaked and personalized. Managers come in all shapes and sizes with different personal experiences, personalities, backgrounds and educational degrees. Thus, with such an individualized experience, are there any contributions to the literature on management that may be embraced and properly utilized? It appears that one work of importance that seems to be very different from others in the field is something called The Functions of the Executive by Chester Irving Barnard. In this work, Barnard (1968) uses psychology to embrace ideas about management style and alternative methods. Here, the author examines the psychology of doing business and internal problems within organizations. The focus is on the employee, his or her goals and feelings and how employees should be treated. The relationships between superiors and subordinates are held high. Much of the work seems to rely on motivational theory and the idea that if an employee is happy, his work is good. It was a contrast to the models around at the time that relied solely on a hierarchy with titles and job descriptions. Here, a much looser view of work life is taken.
