a reader can see many different elements and different points made by the author. The following paper examines how the symbolism in the story supports and proves the nature of
the father. Barn Burning by Faulkner In the beginning of the story one can begin to get a very clear picture of the nature of the father, through
symbolic elements, as the boy is heading up to the stand in the courtroom: "His father, stiff in his black Sunday coat donned not for the trial but for the
moving, did not even look at him" (Faulkner). The symbolic image that the reader gets is of a man who is something of a wild thing, a man who is
ready to move, to leave town, and a man who one would assume is not incredibly religious in any righteous way as the Sunday suit is used for escaping the
real world. In addition, the fact he would not look at his son also indicates that he is a weak man who does not really care about his family, or
child, which is further emphasized by his stiff nature. All of these symbolic descriptions lay the foundation for understanding the father and his cold nature As the story progresses
there are more and more subtle examples that symbolically illustrate the father as a man who does not face responsibility and thus a man who is not concerned with anything
