opportunities to learn about leadership, what works and what doesnt. This paper uses Kellermans ideas to analyze Adolf Hitler and why he was a bad leader according to her definition. It also describes his leadership style, his followers and their style, and whether or not he was effective. Discussion Kellerman identifies seven kinds of leaders: incompetent, rigid, intemperate, callous, corrupt, insular and evil (Kellerman, 2004). Leaders can of course fall into more than one category as Hitler obviously does. He is clearly evil, but the scope of his crimes and his indifference to suffering mark him as callous as well. Intemperate, meaning out of control and given to rash action, could also be used to describe him. But he is most clearly evil, since Kellermans definition of an evil leader is one who, among other things, commits atrocities and sets out to deliberately inflict pain (2004). Hitler obviously did both. But, she notes, she was once giving a talk in which she called Hitler a bad leader, only to be challenged by someone in the audience. The man pointed out that he was bad in the sense of ethically bad, "But he was a good leader in that he was very effective. The man was right" (Kellerman, 2004, p. 29). This is the dilemma which, Kellerman argues, no one wants to acknowledge: that bad, even vicious, leaders can be effective. Its the elephant in the bedroom, or the board room. But the fact remains that from 1933 to 1941, when he ordered the disastrous invasion of Russia, "Hitlers political and military strategies were nearly impeccable" (Kellerman, 2004, p. 29).
