Obama as a writer. It does not discuss his policies or his presidency, or take a partisan position. Discussion Barack Obama is half-black, half-white, and that in itself is the reason for his search: he wants to understand who he is, and how he came to be that way. Like all people of mixed parentage, Obama is unsure which world to claim as his own, and where he will fit in-if he ever does. Obama was luckier than many mixed-race children, because both sides of his family loved him dearly. They had no trouble accepting him, and although his appearance clearly shows his African-American heritage, he was raised mostly by his white grandmother, at least during his school years. In some ways, it might have been easier for Mr. Obama to decide which culture to embrace because his appearance is decidedly African-American. There is no way he could "pass" for white, even if he wanted to do so. Thus, his mixed heritage, despite the acceptance of his family, led him on a journey to find out who he really is, and how his family backgrounds blend to make him the person he is. His style is casual and conversational, but he has a tendency toward long digressions, mostly inward-seeking, as he tries to determine what led him to the place he inhabited as he wrote the book. He states his purpose in writing the book very clearly in the preface to the 2004 edition (the book was first published ten years earlier): "I received an advance from a publisher and went to work with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid ...
