promoted. In other words, their existence is toned down. They are seen as aberrations and examples are made of those who are in the limelight such as Bill Cosby or
Colin Powell. Yet, these people are by no means unique. In fact, it is a myth that the black race is less intellectual, and the myth is largely brought about
by racism, by the bell curve debate, by the fact that education is lacking in black neighborhoods, and by concepts like Ebonics. Of course, the black intellectual prototype is nothing
new. It is just that media today promotes the negative image of the black man. They are thugs, hoodlums or gangstas, and there is therefore a stereotype that a young
black male is more likely to be a criminal than an intellectual. And while that is the state of affairs today, things were not much different in the past. The
book begins by exploring the peculiar position of African priests and medicine men during slave days, something that proceeds well into the present (Dillard, 1997). The reality that the author
provides is that historically there has been intellect in the black community. This is true from slave days when the people drew on the wisdom from medicine men from their
native lands to the intellectuals who existed within slave territory. Of course, one point made by the book is that the reason for a lack of education in the black
community is related to the fact that the individuals were enslaved for a large part of the time. Frederick Douglass is a case in point and a great man who
is highlighted by authors. Throughout history, there have been great men like W.E.B. DuBois and Martin Luther King and the author does make reference to many important black people who
