An in-market acquisition provides value in that it should positively contribute to cost efficiencies. An out-market acquisition provides revenues formerly unavailable to the acquiring bank (Moore and Siems, 1998). Competent integration of the acquiring bank and the target provides value by allowing the acquiring bank to gain greater benefit than if integration is poor (Pursuing merger value, n.d.). Tax benefits also may contribute to greater value (Mastracchio and Cahill, 1995). In-market Acquisition When the acquisition is within the same market that the acquiring bank operated in prior to the merger, it gains not only access to but a customer relationship with those that had decided to work with a competing bank. The acquiring bank gains operational revenues as well as market share in the market in which it operates. These gains give the acquiring bank greater standing within its industry and within the markets in which it operates. Providing the same services to a greater number of customers enables the acquiring bank to operate with greater cost efficiencies than when providing the same services to fewer customers.
