death of Bambis mother--that would be upsetting if reread over and over again to a small child. However, the basic gist of this "coming of age" story is retained
in that Bambi grows up and assumes the role of an adult deer during the course of the narrative. Like the classic film, the book begins with the birth
of the new "prince of the forest," the young fawn Bambi. Words that would be difficult for young readers, such as "thicket" and "fawn" can be easily understood through the
use of the illustration, which shows a doe staring fondly at her newborn with thick brambles pictured in the background. Sentence structure if kept at a simplistic level with no
complex sentences and the vocabulary tends to be repetitive. For example, "wobbled and "wobbly" are used to describe Bambis first efforts at standing. Bambi begins to grow and becomes
stronger, meeting and making friends with other forest animals, including a female fawn, Faline. While walking with his mother, Bambi sees his father standing on a mountain peak. Here again,
words that are unfamiliar?"stag" and "antlers"--are clearly defined through the context of the illustration and the use of dialogue. Time passes, and in the spring, Bambi is surprised by
his own reflection in the water. He has become a buck with antlers?like his father. The conflict of competition for mating, which is inherent in the animal kingdom, is reduced
to Bambi pushing a rival for Falines attention into a pond. But, nevertheless, Bambi has won the now grown-up Faline and is a full-grown deer. Although simplified greatly, all the
parts of a good narrative are here?conflict, characterization, and resolution. In this manner, young children are exposed to the essential essence of storytelling with characters to whom they can relate.
