dance form to entertain the wealthy and the elite. Interestingly enough, though perhaps not surprisingly, it is also a dance form that is generally confined to the white race of
Europeans. However, the history and the art of ballet is far more complex than that. Or, as one author notes, "Ballets origins are more diverse than its image suggests...and a
look at the art forms history shows its reputation for elitism to be surprisingly undeserved" (Webb, 2006; 41). The following paper examines the history, providing a general and modern overview
as well, of ballet. Ballet "Ballet at the French court began under Louis XIV and most of its key terms--arabesque, fouette
and the rest--are still expressed in French" (The Economist (US), 2006; 69US). Ballet, under Louis XIV, began in the middle of the 17th century (Webb, 2006; 41). At first it
was nothing more than something of a court entertainment and as such was likely less than tasteful at times (Webb, 2006; 41). However, as time went on it began to
expand and then in the early 19th century "flowered...with the popularity of Romantic ballets such as La Sylphide, in which the ballerina Marie Taglioni danced en pointe (on the tips
of her toes), wearing the bell-shaped white tutu that is, for many, the enduring image of the ballet dancer" (Webb, 2006; 41). Although
most people assume once ballet got it start it became a powerful art form that never waned, by the the middle of the 19th century it became restricted to operas
