of two African-American brothers. One, who is never named, is a successful middle-class businessman, the other (Sonny) is a musician and drug addict, living a bohemian lifestyle of which the
narrator disapproves. The story is really the tale of their relationship and how the narrator struggles to understand his brothers behavior, and the part music plays in Sonnys life. When
the story opens the narrator and Sonny have been estranged for over a year; the narrator is reading a newspaper and discovers that Sonny has been arrested in a drug
raid and jailed (Class lecture on "Sonnys Blues"). The narrator is saddened and upset by this turn of events and as he tries to come to terms with it, one
of Sonnys friends approaches him and tells him that he blames himself for whats happened to Sonny (Class lecture on "Sonnys Blues"). The two discuss whats happened, and the narrator
begins his struggle to try and understand why Sonny has become a drug addict (Class lecture on "Sonnys Blues"). The narrator remains angry and disappointed in Sonny and doesnt see
