of all college students in the United States are at least age 25 or older (Burden, 1995). Many employed persons elect to go back to school for various reasons,
including advancement in their current job, making a career change, or to satisfy employment requirements (Burden, 1995). Juggling the demands of job and school presents a formidable challenge, to
be sure. It is a precarious balancing act that requires careful planning and an unwavering determination to succeed. Because returning to school is often a job necessity,
employers are usually willing to be accommodating as far as offering flexible work schedules. If this is the case, a student is encourage to discuss any conflicts with a
supervisor so that the workday may be tailored to accommodate school attendance. If going back to school is a personal decision, there are still alternatives available that allow for
taking classes without any interruption to an eight-hour workday. Because of the increased number of adult students, there are a number of academic institutions that offer curriculums with the
full-time employee in mind. Schools such as New York Universitys School of Continuing Education have workshops, early morning, evening and weekend classes from which to choose (Burden, 1995).
There are also such places of higher learning such as the University of Phoenix "that are geared completely to working adults" (Burden, 1995, p. 88). For those who have
personal computers and Internet access, there are other options as well. There are several accredited schools such as the University of Phoenix Online, DeVry University and ITT Technical Institute
that offer online courses in which working people can pursue learning at their own pace, in the evenings, on weekends or whenever their schedule permits. Although there are
