the multiple reports of criminal and heinous acts that regularly flood the media, we believe that we live in an era of evil. We see ourselves as somewhat steeled
against the existence of that evil, believing that our awareness and caution will somehow shield us from the brunt of the cruelty that can lie just below the surface of
civilization. In reality, however, most of us have never seen the true face of evil, therefore cannot even begin to fathom the depth of its cruelty nor the inner
strength required to battle it on a daily basis. There are those still among us today who have not only looked upon the full and open face of evil,
but have lived within its presence, not for mere hours nor days, but for years. There are those who survived the closest thing to hell on earth that has
ever existed in mans history, those who survived the Nazi concentration camps such as Auschwitz during World War II. Anyone who has ever found themselves in a position of immediate
peril knows that the human instinct for survival is strong and that this inherent resilience strengthens and toughens in the face of grave danger. But how far can this
human resilience be stretched without being torn asunder, and how long can the spark of human spirit burn within when it is exposed every hour, every day to evil that
is intent on extinguishing it forever? And how, if the human body manages to survive atrocities such as those at Auschwitz, could one keep both the human psyche and
the human heart intact as well? Where, in all the horror, would lie the balance between individual self-interest and collective solidarity, between resigned compliance and rebellious resistance? Just
