realizing that the way that they deal with their employees can determine not just the employees future but the companys future. That fact is more than clear in a
case described by Dr. Jeffrey Lenn. After years of phenomenal business success Northeast Data Resources (NDR) has now lost five key contracts worth a total of almost $5
million dollars. Major changes must occur so that the budget can be brought under control and revenues increased. Those changes will center around company personnel.
The contract losses suffered by NDR have occurred over the last six months. During the same time period sales have dropped because of heavy competition
that has emerged in one of the companys key markets. This has resulted in a difficult period for NDR. These losses have all occurred on the tail of
considerable increases in expenses because of key decisions that have been made to increase the size of both the engineering department at the company and the financial service department.
These decisions regarding department increases at NDR were made, of course, at a time when the future of NDR seemed secure.
Never-the-less, they have resulted in a continual cash outflow at one of the most critical times in NDRs history. The company now must not only cut its budget substantially
