Discussion George Balanchine: George Balanchine was born Georgi Melitonovich Balanchivadze in 1904 in St. Petersburg, where he began studying piano at the age of 5 ("George Balanchine (1904-1983), Choreographer", hereafter
"Balanchine"). He studied acting and dance, but always with the idea that if the theater didnt work out, he would join the military ("Balanchine"). At first, the youngster didnt care
much for the dance, but once he performed on stage he "became enamored of the theater" ("Balanchine"). His training was in the classical Russian ballet as it had been established
by Petipa and notes that despite belief to the contrary, ballet was not particularly popular in Russia ("Balanchine"). It wasnt until the 1917 Revolution that the authorities were persuaded to
reinstate it ("Balanchine"). Sometime between 1919 and 1921, Balanchine enrolled in the "Petrograd (Leningrad) Conservatory of Music" while he continued to dance ("Balanchine"). At the conservatory he studied "piano and
