somewhat different styles. The following paper discusses some of the elements in the two structures. 1. Design Concept The "Stahl House" possesses "Powerful minimalist forms with steel construction orchestrated
with sublime elegance. Linear forms connecting visually with the LA street grid visible below" (Matthews [2], 2004). The Bailey House is perhaps more simplistic: "Simple and frank use of industrial
construction techniques to elegant effect" (Matthews [1], 2004). In addition we note that the Bailey Houses concept is more classical it seems: "The house, surrounded completely by pools, introduces a
new concept in making water an integral structure and landscape element" (Matthews [1], 2004). 2. Structural System The Bailey House is "a series of 10- by 22-foot bays
9 feet high; each frame is composed of an 8-inch I-beam, floor channel and three 4-inch wide flange columns. The frames were shop- fabricated and delivered to the site in
one piece" and "The two exterior bays came shop-equipped with a 4-inch channel which tied into the columns at sill height..." (Matthews [1], 2004). With the Stahl House we note
the following analysis of the structural style, or system: "There, hovering almost weightlessly above the bright lights of Los Angeles, spread out like a carpet below, is an elegant, light,
economical and transparent enclosure whose apparent simplicity belies the rigorous process of investigation that made it possible" (Matthews [2], 2004). 3. Spatial Organization In relationship to the spatial
organization of these two homes, we note first that the Stahl House, comprised of a great deal of glass, is incredibly geometrical in organization. It is crisp and linear and
