in politics may be established but this is still a culture that, in most countries is less than a century old. Looking to the Middle East and political landscape there
is a very different culture. Both the UDHR and CEDAW put forward the ideal of equality for men and women in politics but in many Arab nations this is not
the case, even where they have signed up to these declarations. Bahrioan is ahead of many other nations, and to loo at Bahrain and the position of women in politics
we need to look at the country and its Arab context. The UDHR states "Everyone has the right to take part in the government of their country" at
article 21 and Article 7 (a) of CEDAW says that the states will commit themselves to policies that women will be able to "vote in all elections and public referenda
and [be] eligible for election to all publicly elected bodies" (quoted Sakr, 2000). The culture is one that resists this due to the influence of Sharia law and the general
social influences and pressures. The overwhelming model is that of authoritarian politics where in most states women do not have the right to vote, or take part in the political
process. To place this in a large context we have t remember the rights of women are generally much lower, women being umbel to travel without being accompanied by a
man and having a status the same a child, with no rights (Alvi, 2005). However no political, system remains static and there are some small but gradual changes with some
countries allowing women not only to vote, but to stand for political office. These rights may be undermined by the culture and the male domination, but there is movement in
