Baggy or sagging pants (or trousers) may have started out as simple a fashion trend but they have become the symbol of a youth subculture. This 5 page paper looks at the way that the wearing of baggy/saggy pants developed and underlying meanings and values that the style may be interpreted as embodying and communicating. with youth subcultures, the association may be with skateboarders or hip hop, or just youths hanging out on a street. Unlike many other fashions, this does appear to be confined
to the specific sub cultures, even with the adoption of the approach by some fashion houses and the emulation by fashion conscious personalities the same signs, meanings or associations are
not as strongly attached. Baggy/saggy pants may be seen as a new phenomenon, but they are not, there is a long historical use of the style of pants (trousers)
as an external symbol of male culture. More than two millennia ago the Dhoti was worn by Hindu men in South Asia, this was a loin cloth that was wrapped
around the hips and thighs, giving the appearance of baggy knee length pants. In Japan during the twelfth century the courtiers everyday clothes, the noshi, and clothing worn during hunting,
the kariginu were both made up generous jackets coming to the hips and pants that were very baggy tied at the ankles. In the ottoman empire Turkey has also seen
the wearing of baggy pants, but this time fitting tightly on the lower leg whilst baggy on the upper section of the leg. In most of these cases even where
the hip area has been baggy there has not been a dropped waist and the underwear has not been placed on show (where worn).
