It is an ancient creature, yet also a creature that is apparently endangered as well. The following paper examines the history of the Bactrian camel in the Gobi Desert as
well as other information that describes the Bactrian camel of the Gobi Desert. Bactrian Camel of the Gobi Desert "The wild
Bactrian (two-humped) camel is adapted to arid plains and hills where water sources are few and vegetation is sparse" (Massicot). Their main diet consists of shrubs and they have a
tendency to range far and wide through the desert constantly following one water source or another (Massicot). They are also generally found in the mountains of the desert because this
is where water springs are more likely to occur (Massicot). They generally group together in herds from 2 to 15 camels though they have been known to gather in groups
of 100 (Massicot). In the past this camel has been known to live "from the great bend of the Yellow River at
110 deg E westward across the deserts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China to central Kazakhstan" (Massicot). But, because it was hunted greatly during the 1800s the numbers dwindled a
great deal (Massicot). They were hunted for their hide as well as their meat (Massicot). "By the 1920s, its populations had become fragmented, and it is currently restricted to three
small, remnant populations in Mongolia and China" (Massicot). In addition, because of the extensive hunting and the reduction of the amount of wild land available to them these days they
